Crypto cloud mining scams: how they work and what to do
A cloud mining scam claims to mine crypto for you in exchange for an investment, showing steady "daily profits" โ until you try to withdraw and hit a wall of fees, "upgrades," and excuses.
If this happened to you, it is not your fault. These platforms look professional and pay out just enough early on to seem real. Here's how they work โ and what to do now.
What is a cloud mining scam?
It's a platform or app that sells you "mining power" or a "mining contract" with the promise of fixed daily crypto returns. In reality there's no mining โ the dashboard numbers are fabricated, early "profits" are paid from new deposits, and getting your money out becomes impossible.
How the scam unfolds
- 1.The pitch. An ad, app, or referral promises passive income from "mining" with guaranteed daily returns.
- 2.The deposit. You buy a "plan" or "hashpower," and the dashboard starts showing daily earnings.
- 3.The bait. A small early withdrawal may work, and you're pushed to reinvest or recruit others for bigger returns.
- 4.The block. Larger withdrawals require an "upgrade," "fee," or "tax" first โ or the account is frozen and the platform vanishes.
Warning signs
- ๐ฉGuaranteed or fixed daily returns (real mining is volatile and never guaranteed).
- ๐ฉAggressive referral / recruitment rewards (a pyramid-style structure).
- ๐ฉNo verifiable, real-world mining operation behind it.
- ๐ฉWithdrawals require a fee, "tax," or upgrade to release.
- ๐ฉA newly created app or site with little verifiable history.
If it's happening now โ do this first
- โขStop depositing, and never pay a "withdrawal fee" or "tax" โ that's just more theft.
- โขDon't reinvest the fake "earnings" shown on the dashboard.
- โขScreenshot the platform, your plan, the wallet addresses, and all transactions.
- โขIf you paid by card or bank, contact them about a chargeback or recall.
How to report it
- โขYour local police โ file an official report and keep the reference number.
- โขYour national fraud body and financial regulator (see the full reporting directory).
- โขThe app store if it was an app, and your bank if you paid via fiat.
- โขReport the scam wallet address on Chainabuse.
โ ๏ธ Beware the second scam
"Recovery experts" may contact you promising to get your money back for a fee. The majority are scammers targeting victims a second time. Never pay anyone who guarantees recovery or asks for an upfront fee. Read the red flags โ
You're not alone
Cloud mining scams borrow the language of a real industry to seem credible, and early payouts make them convincing. Being taken in is not a reflection on you. Reach out to someone you trust and consider a moderated victim community for support.
