Bitcoin ATM scams: how they work and what to do
In a crypto ATM scam, someone pressures you to withdraw cash and feed it into a Bitcoin machine โ scanning a QR code that sends the money straight to the scammer. Once it's in, it's gone.

How the scam unfolds
- 1.A scary or urgent call/message. "Your account is compromised", "you owe tax", "there's a warrant", or a romance/investment push.
- 2.They keep you on the phone and tell you to withdraw cash to "protect" or "verify" it.
- 3.They direct you to a Bitcoin ATM and have you scan a QR code (their wallet) and insert the cash.
- 4.The money is gone instantly โ crypto transactions can't be reversed.
Warning signs
- ๐ฉAnyone telling you to pay via a Bitcoin ATM โ always a scam.
- ๐ฉPressure to stay on the phone and act immediately.
- ๐ฉA "government agency", "bank", or "tech support" demanding crypto payment.
- ๐ฉBeing told to scan a QR code you were sent.
If it just happened โ do this first
- โขStop and hang up. Don't make any more deposits, no matter the threat.
- โขKeep the receipt from the ATM and note the machine's location and operator.
- โขContact the ATM operator immediately (number on the machine/receipt) โ if reported fast, a few operators can occasionally halt a transaction.
- โขSave the QR/wallet address, amounts, and any messages.

- โขYour local police and national fraud body (see the reporting directory).
- โขThe Bitcoin ATM operator (named on the machine/receipt).
- โขReport the scam wallet address on Chainabuse.
