NFT scams: how they work and what to do
NFT scams target collectors with fake mints, counterfeit collections, hacked Discord/X links, and malicious offers โ usually to get you to sign a transaction that quietly drains your wallet.
If this happened to you, it is not your fault. These scams imitate real projects and exploit the speed and hype of NFT drops. Here's how they work โ and what to do now.
What is an NFT scam?
It's any scam built around NFTs: a fake "mint" or free-claim site, a counterfeit version of a real collection, a phishing link posted from a hacked Discord or X account, or a too-good offer on your NFT. Most are designed to make you connect your wallet and sign something that hands over access to your assets.
How the scam unfolds
- 1.The lure. A hyped mint, a "free" airdrop claim, a big offer on your NFT, or a link from a hacked project Discord/X.
- 2.The fake site. You land on a counterfeit mint page or marketplace that looks legitimate.
- 3.The signature. You connect your wallet and approve/sign a transaction to "mint," "claim," or "accept."
- 4.The drain. The signature grants access โ your NFTs and tokens are swept โ or you simply paid for a worthless counterfeit.
Warning signs
- ๐ฉUrgent, "limited" mints and links shared in DMs, comments, or Discord.
- ๐ฉ"Free" NFTs or claims that require you to sign a transaction.
- ๐ฉOffers far above an NFT's real value, or messages from "support."
- ๐ฉAn unverified collection, or a URL that's slightly off from the official one.
- ๐ฉA signature request you don't understand (e.g. setApprovalForAll).
If you just signed something โ do this first
- โขRevoke approvals at revoke.cash for the wallet you connected.
- โขMove your valuable NFTs and tokens to a fresh wallet (new seed phrase, created offline).
- โขDon't sign anything else on that site, and disconnect your wallet.
- โขScreenshot the site, links, and transactions for your report.
How to report it
- โขYour local police and national fraud body (see the reporting directory).
- โขThe marketplace (OpenSea, etc.) and the platform where the link was posted.
- โขReport the scam wallet/contract address on Chainabuse.
โ ๏ธ Beware the second scam
"Recovery experts" may contact you promising to get your assets back for a fee. Most are scammers targeting victims again. Never pay anyone who guarantees recovery or asks for an upfront fee. Read the red flags โ
