Crypto task & job scams: how they work and what to do

A task or job scam offers easy online work โ€” rating products, liking videos, "completing tasks" โ€” then traps you into depositing crypto to "unlock" your earnings. The deposits are stolen and the withdrawals never come.

If this happened to you, it is not your fault. These scams use real wages early on to build trust before the trap. Here's how they work โ€” and what to do now.

What is a task or job scam?

It's a fake "work from home" opportunity, usually offered out of the blue on WhatsApp, Telegram, or by text. You complete simple tasks for small commissions โ€” but to keep earning, you're told to deposit your own crypto to "unlock" the next tier or clear a manufactured "negative balance." Every deposit goes to the scammer.

How the scam unfolds

  1. 1.The offer. An unsolicited message promises easy, well-paid online work for a few minutes a day.
  2. 2.The hook. You complete a few tasks and get paid small amounts for real โ€” which makes it feel legitimate.
  3. 3.The trap. To continue, you must deposit crypto to "unlock" higher-paying tasks or fix a sudden "negative balance."
  4. 4.The drain. The required deposits keep growing, and when you try to withdraw, you're blocked or asked for even more.

Warning signs

If it's happening now โ€” do this first

  • โ€ขStop depositing immediately. No real job ever requires you to pay to get paid. The "negative balance" is fake.
  • โ€ขDon't try to "clear" the balance to withdraw โ€” that's the core of the trap.
  • โ€ขScreenshot the chats, the platform, the wallet addresses, and all your transactions.
  • โ€ขBlock the contact and stop all communication.
