How to report a crypto scam in the United States
Report to the federal bodies below and your local police. Reporting fast helps investigators and, occasionally, helps freeze funds.
Report to these authorities
- β’FBI IC3 β the Internet Crime Complaint Center; the main place to report online and crypto fraud.
- β’FTC β ReportFraud β the Federal Trade Commission's fraud reporting site.
- β’CFTC β for crypto and commodities investment fraud.
- β’SEC β for securities/investment fraud.
- β’Your local police and state Attorney General's office.
Do this in every case
- β’Stop all contact and send no more money β including "fees" or "taxes" to withdraw.
- β’Secure your accounts (passwords + 2FA) and move any remaining crypto.
- β’Preserve evidence: screenshots, wallet addresses, transaction hashes.
- β’Tell the exchange or bank involved immediately, and report the scam wallet address on Chainabuse.
β οΈ Beware "recovery" services. Anyone who contacts you promising to get your money back for an upfront fee is almost always a second scam. See the red flags β
